Peter Joseph Schalk, 78, of New Riegel, died at 8:49 pm Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at Independence House, Fostoria.
Peter was born March 3, 1942, in Fostoria to Joseph and Helen (Steinmetz) Schalk. He married Margaret “Peg” Sloma on July 20, 1968, in St. Mary Catholic Church, Millersville and she survives in New Riegel.
Other survivors include three sons, Michael (Kristen Lindsay) Schalk of Fremont, Joseph (Janice) Schalk of Bluffton, William (Darcie) Schalk of Plain City; two daughters, Michelle (Alvaro) Calabia of Derwood, Maryland, Anita (Bradley) Swartz of Caseyville, Illinois; 13 grandchildren, Gregory Schalk, Alvaro Calabia, Anna Calabia, Helena Calabia, Brynn Schalk, Jessa Schalk, Tonia Swartz, Krysta Swartz, Alicia Swartz, Cal Swartz, Sadie Schalk, Sydney Schalk, Bo Schalk; two brothers, Carl (Carolyn) Schalk of New Riegel, John (Jeanne) Schalk of Fostoria; and a sister, Ann (Mark) Foos of Helena.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Peter was a 1960 graduate of New Riegel High School, a 1969 graduate of the Cleveland Engineering Institute, and retired from National Machinery on March 15, 2001, and was a member of its Quarter Century Club. He was a member of All Saints Parish, a Eucharistic Minister, adult Mass server, a member of the choir and after his retirement, he worked cleaning and did maintenance for the church for many years. Peter also was a Junior Fair Foundation Trustee helping with flea markets and was a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 10749.
A masked walk through viewing will be 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2020, at All Saints Parish, New Riegel. Visitors are asked to wear masks and social distance as they walk through, pay respects, and exit without lingering.
The funeral Mass will be 11:00 am Saturday, at All Saints Parish, with Rev. Timothy Kummerer officiating. Burial will follow in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, New Riegel.
