Norman O. Young, Sr., 96, formerly of Tiffin, passed away October 5, 2023, at his home in Brooklyn, CT.
He was born August 29, 1927, the youngest of six children to Myrtle V. (Knouse) and Jesse Grant Young. He married Norma Jean Bean on April 3, 1947 – Norma’s 18th birthday, in Tiffin, Ohio. They were married for 61 years until Norma’s death on July 18, 2008.
Survivors include his children Sandra (Lou) Brodeur of Brooklyn, CT., Norman Junior (Kim) of Holland, Ohio, and Patti Ambrose of Crestline, Ohio. He was preceded in death by one son, Randolph Grant. Norman is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Norm served in the Navy from 1943 till 1945 as a radioman and gun captain on the USS Norris. After the war ended, he worked as a welder until he retired. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Tiffin, served as a deacon at the church, and volunteered his services when the congregation built their new church.
Norm moved to Connecticut to live with his daughter Sandy and her husband on their farm in 2015. During this time he began his second career – farming. He helped care for the cows and chickens. He also started new seedlings and tended to plants, weeds, and watering in their high tunnels. He became quite the farmer! Norm and his daughter, Sandy, also built many birdhouses, feeders, and bat houses.
Norman was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers Clifford, Carl, Jesse, and Robert and sister Helen Mae Lobdell.
Funeral services will be 11 am Thursday, October 12, 2023 at Grace Baptist Church, with Pastor Jerry Boylan officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmont Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the United Veterans Council of Seneca County. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
