Catherine M. (Smith) Schalk

Catherine M. Schalk, 98, of New Riegel, died at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, July 4, 2021, at Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria.  She was born Jan. 17, 1923, in Seneca County to Albert John and Martha (Welly) Smith.  She married Clarence F. Schalk, Jan. 3, 1945, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin.  He died May 13, 1990.

Survivors include nine sons, Frederick ( Mary ) Schalk, Lawrence (Linda) Schalk, John (Norma) Schalk, Thomas Schalk, all of New Riegel, Edward (Cheryl) Schalk of Alvada, Timothy (Margaret) Schalk, Stephen Schalk, Daniel (Rosemary) Schalk, and Gary (Marie) Schalk all of New Riegel; two daughters, Carol (Robert) Gallant of Worthington, and Patricia (Larry) Metzger of Carey; 36 grandchildren, and 60 great grandchildren.

She is predeceased by five brothers, Alfred, Maurice, Kenneth, Carl, Myron and Richard Smith; and a half sister, Alice Seitz.

Catherine was a homemaker.  She attended Calvert High School.  She was a member of All Saints Parish, New Riegel.  She enjoyed socializing for many years with the members of her sewing club.

Public visitation will be 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 2021, followed by the funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints Parish, New Riegel.  The Mass will be officiated by Rev. Jeff Smith. Burial will follow at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.  The Mass will be live-streamed on the church and the funeral home websites.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
