Bernard J. “Bernie” Tiell, 88, of Tiffin, died at 7 a.m. Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Tiffin Rehabilitation Center.
Bernie was born February 5, 1935, in Seneca County to Charles and Irene (Homan) Tiell. He married Julia Schetter October 15, 1960, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, and she died July 25, 1982.
Survivors include four sons, Thomas Tiell and Francis Tiell both of Tiffin, Kenneth (Julie) Tiell of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Christopher Tiell of Tiffin; two daughters, Theresa (Charles) Hall of Pitkin, Louisiana, Charlotte (Bryan) Gibson of Jackson, Michigan: 11 grandchildren, Michelle DeWeese, Christina Guynn, Michael DeWeese, Kimberly DeWeese, Thomas Beekman, Jamie Coulombe, Branden Beekman, Ace Crawford, Gloria Tucker, Jeremy Crawford, and Julia Tiell; 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Howard (Shirley) Tiell of Tiffin, Carl (Sandy) Tiell of Toledo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife; a son, James Tiell; a daughter, Lora Tiell; and a brother, Harold Tiell.
Bernie was a 1953 graduate of Hopewell-Loudon High School, was in the Army Reserves, and retired as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He was an avid bowler, golfer, fisherman, carpenter, and woodworker.
Visitation for family and friends will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at TRAUNERO FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, 214 S. Monroe Street, Tiffin, Ohio 44883, 419-447-3113.
Prayers will be said at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. prior to the Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 5, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Matthew Rader officiating. The rosary will be recited 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be private in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.
