Sister Marie Herman, age 80, of the Sisters of St. Francis of Tiffin, died at 5:25 AM, Thursday, October 22, 2009 at St. Francis Home, Tiffin.
She was born to the late Leonard and Cecilia (Long) Herman in Edgerton, Ohio on August 22, 1929.
Sister Marie is survived by, two sisters, Sister Marcella Herman, OSF/T and Alice Moriarty; and one brother, John Herman.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Sister Carol Herman, and one brother, Paul Herman.
Sister Marie earned her Master’s Degree of Education from the Catholic University, Washington, D.C. Sister Marie served many people in the Toledo Diocese through Education Ministry in both Parochial and Public schools. She taught at Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Fort Jennings, Marywood, Seneca-Huron Schools in Attica, and Reed. She taught and was principal at St. Patrick’s, Bryan, Ohio, and at St. Bernard’s, New Washington. Sister Marie served as the Coordinator of Education at St. Anthony’s Villa in Toledo for two years. Then she became Executive Secretary for the Sisters of St. Francis, Tiffin, for the following 6 years. Sister Marie spent the remaining 20 years serving as school secretary, administrative assistant, and assistant principal at St. Patrick Heatherdowns in Toledo.
Upon leaving the field of Education Sister Marie continued to serve the community and others through her ministry of prayer and service. At the time of her death she was a Minister of Prayer.
Sister Marie always had a beaming, friendly smile on her face no matter where she was or what she was doing. For relaxation Sister Marie enjoyed reading, crocheting, sewing, and collecting stamps. Some might even say that she put her own “stamp” on life these past 80 years.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 25 from 2-7 PM, with a Christian Wake service at 4 PM, at St. Francis Convent Chapel, 200 St. Francis Ave, Tiffin.
The Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM, Monday, October 26, 2009 in St. Francis Convent Chapel. Burial will be in St. Francis Convent cemetery.
