Sister Gilberta Gerschutz, age 84, of the Sisters of St. Francis of Tiffin, Ohio, died at 5:50 am Saturday, May 29, 2010 at St. Francis Home.
She was born September 19, 1925, in New Bavaria, Ohio, to John and Florence (Schondel) Gerschutz of Sacred Heart Parish, New Bavaria, Ohio.
Surviving are three sisters, Helen Phillips of Hamler, Ohio, Elizabeth Nowicki of Toledo, and Rita Maag of Ottawa, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, Angela Niese, Ida Phillips, Mary Agnes Gerschutz, Bernadine Ellerbrock, and Bernetta Pletcher; and three brothers, Clem, Albert and Albinus Gerschutz
Sister Gilberta, formerly Valeria Catherine Gerschutz, served in domestic services at Peru, Reed, Landeck, Carey, Edgerton, North Auburn, New Washington, St. Anthony Villa in Toledo, and at St. Francis Convent in Tiffin. Sister Gilberta also served as a floor supervisor, nurse aide, and volunteer at St. Francis Home in Tiffin for 33 years.
Sister Gilberta served the community as a Minister of Prayer and Service from 2001 until the time of her death. She enjoyed reading, embroidering, and was a lover of nature. She delighted in the beauty of flowers as she arranged floral bouquets. In her later years, Sister Gilberta spent many hours trimming cancelled stamps and sending them to the missions.
Visitation will be 11 am until 1 pm Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at St. Francis Home Chapel, 182 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin, and Tuesday from 2-8 PM at St. Francis Convent Chapel, 200 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin. A Christian Wake Service will be held in the convent chapel at 4 pm Tuesday.
The Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Wednesday, June 2, 2010 in St. Francis Convent Chapel. Burial will follow in St. Francis Convent Cemetery.
