Sister Marcella Herman (formerly Sister Mary Regina), age 87, of the Sisters of St. Francis of Tiffin, Ohio died at 1:40 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 2024, at St. Francis Home.
She was born May 1, 1937, in Edgerton, Ohio, to Leonard and Cecil (Long) Herman.
Surviving is one sister, Alice Moriarty of Napoleon, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Sister Marie Herman, Sister Carol Herman, and three brothers, Paul Herman, Edward Herman, and John Herman.
Sister Marcella earned her Master of Education in Social Studies from the University of Toledo and Licentiate in Canon Law from St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada and served as an elementary teacher at Bismark, Bryan, Toledo St. Anthony Villa, Custar, and New Washington, and as a high school teacher in Bismarck, North Dakota, and Paducah, Kentucky. She served in pastoral work in McKee, Kentucky, and was a pastoral associate in Cecil, Payne, and Carey. After an internship with the Tribunal of the Diocese of Toledo and after receiving her licentiate in Canon Law, she served as a Defender of the Bond for the Tribunal of the Diocese of Toledo from 1997 until her retirement in 2015. Sister Marcella then became a minister of prayer and presence at St. Francis Convent and St. Francis Home. In 2022, she became a resident of the Chiara Center at St. Francis Home.
Among other things, Sister Marcella had a 30 second conversation with Pope John Paul II which she labels as a “momentous event.”
A Christian Wake Service will be held via Zoom on Monday evening, June 17, at 7:00 o’clock.
Visitation will be 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2024, the Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m., all at the St. Francis Convent Chapel with Rev. Ted Miller officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Convent cemetery.
