Rev. Russell Francis Gillig, age 92, of Tiffin, Ohio, died April 28, 2002. He was born July 12, 1909, in Tiffin, to Otto and Clara (Kuntz) Gillig. He is survived by a brother, Donald of Tiffin, and a sister, Joan Greenspun of Sun City, AZ. A brother, Edmund Gillig, is deceased. Fr. Gillig attended St. Joseph School and graduated from Tiffin Calvert High School in 1928. He attended St. Joseph College, Renselear, IN, St. Gregory Seminary, Cincinnati, and Mount St. Mary Seminary, Norwood, OH. Fr. Gillig was a Roman Catholic Priest for the Diocese of Toledo, Ohio, serving as an assistant pastor at St. Wendelin, Fostoria, and Good Shepherd, Toledo. He was assistant principal at Calvert High School from 1936 to 1939. He served in Rome City, IN 1939-1940; then he was assistant pastor at St. Peter, Mansfield, 1940-1943, St. Thomas Aquinas, Toledo, 1943-1953; then he became pastor at St. Mary’s, Van Wert, 1953-1968, St. Joseph, Fremont, 1968-1973, and St. Michael, St. Michael Ridge, Ohio, 1973-1978. Fr. Gillig retired in 1978 and then assisted at Immaculate Conception, Bellevue, Ohio, 1978-1980, The Propagation of the Faith throughout the Toledo Diocese, 1980-1987, and has been chaplain at St. Francis Home, Tiffin, since 1988. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. A Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am Friday, May 5, 2002, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 36 Melmore St., Tiffin, with the Most Reverend James R. Hoffman, Bishop of the Toledo Diocese, celebrating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Tiffin. Visitation will be 1:00 to 3:00 pm Thursday, at St. Francis Home Chapel, 182 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin. The body will be received at St. Joseph Church, on Thursday, at 4:00 pm, followed by Vespers, with visitation continuing until 9:00 pm. The Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard at St. Joseph Church from 7:00 to 9:00 pm Tuesday. A Rosary will be recited in the church fifteen minutes prior to Mass on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Home, or Calvert High School, in care of Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, 214 S. Monroe St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883 (419-447-3113).
