PHYLLIS M. SCHEIBER

d. June 26, 2010

Phyllis M. (Fleck) Scheiber, age 92, formerly of Gross Street, left this life at 8:45 P.M., Saturday, June 26, 2010 at St. Francis Home, Tiffin.

She entered this world on February 15, 1918, born to the late Philip and Marcia (Huth) Fleck. On April 29, 1944 in St. Joseph Church, she married Liet. Richard M. Scheiber, U.S.N.R., who survives.

Other survivors are sons Richard (Eva) Scheiber of Rapid City, S.D., and Robert (Diane) Scheiber of Tiffin, along with daughters Margaret Swanson of Marietta, Ga. and Catherine (Rick) Larmer of West Warwick R.I., nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Phyllis also leaves brothers Thomas Fleck of Tiffin and Philip (Laurice) Fleck of Winchester, Mass., along with her sister Patricia (Newt) Mitzman, of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.

Known to friends and family as Fifi and Fefe, she graduated from Tiffin Calvert High School in 1936, attended Marygrove College in Detroit for two years, graduating in 1940 from Heidelberg College and in 1941 from Tiffin Business College. She worked at Fleck Electric in Tiffin.

Fefe understood her fertile times and had her four planned babies potty-trained at 13 months. She managed her family of six for four years while living in Nuremberg, Germany. She played bridge while a student at Calvert and for most of her life. She swam, played golf and tennis. She helped start Cotillion, was a Penthouse and Rosary Altar member, volunteered at Betty Jane Center, and worked with the St. Joseph festival kitchen cleanup crew. For Mercy Hospital she volunteered with telecare, gift shop and delivered meals to the homebound.

Humble. Reserved and generous, she read widely and always gave others more than deserved credit. She was happiest at home raising her little ones. Cheerfully she accepted the job at hand, from Germany to the most menial. For years she was the behind-the-scenes authority and motivator for school classroom lectures students named, “Good Catholic Sex at Calvert High School.” Overall, she reflected the cherished qualities of motherhood, faith and family, pleasant and caring and understanding above all.

She loved animals and they sensed it, especially her mixed-breed terrier Pepper and her German Shepherd Danny. Until her tragic fall, November 21, 2006, and excepting her four baby confinements, she never missed a day in more than 63 years of marriage in being on her feet and functioning fully.
