Elizabeth J. Smith, age 83, of Cottage Avenue, Tiffin, Ohio, died at 1:21 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Mercy Hospital of Tiffin, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on April 26, 1926 in New Riegel, Ohio to the late Lewis and Helen (Wangler) Theis. She married Myron J. Smith on January 15, 1949 in St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Riegel. He died on September 14, 2006.
Survivors include three sons, Michael J. Smith of Tiffin, David A.(Rosemary) Smith of Wainright, Alberta, Canada, Charles L. (Polly) Smith of Suwanee, Ga.; four daughters, Janet M. (Robert) Straub of Bettsville, Kathleen R. Smith of Johnson City, Tenn., Dorothy L. (Rick) Hjortsberg of Perrysburg, and Susan J.(Scott) Yoakam, of Swanton, Ohio, 10 grandchildren, Chad( Katherine) Straub, Audrey (J.J.) Patrick, Stuart Smith, Macy Smith, Edward Smith, Kassy (Aaron) Noblet, Rebecca Hjortsberg, Scott Black, Shawn (Nicole) Black and Lee Hjortsberg; seven great grandchildren, Greg Straub, Summer Black, Dillon Black, Aden Fox, Keith Straub, Elizabeth Straub, and Aleah Noblet; two brothers, Paul L. Theis, of Alvada, Carl M. (Janet) Theis of New Riegel; a sister, Ruth (Richard) Smith of Tiffin.
She is preceded in death by an infant brother, James Theis; four sisters, Rosemary Snavely, Oleta Kelbley, Esther Collet, Dolores Falter; and a grandson, Henry Straub.
Elizabeth was a member of the class of 1944, New Riegel High School. She had retired from the Dietary Department at Mercy Hospital. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, its Rosary Altar Society and a funeral dinner volunteer. She also volunteered at the Soup Kitchen.
Visitation with the family will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday, November 27, 2009 at Traunero Funeral Home 214 S. Monroe Street, Tiffin, Ohio 44883 (419) 447-3113. A wake service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
Prayers will be said at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the funeral Mass following at 1 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Gary Walters officiating. Burial will take place immediately following in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to Community Hospice Care of Tiffin, American Heart Association, or to Mercy Tiffin Hospital in care of Traunero Funeral Home.
