Agnes M. Zeiger, 92, of Tiffin, died at 7:50 a.m. Sunday, March 10, 2019, at Volunteers of America, Autumnwood Care Center, Tiffin. She was born September 11, 1926, in Seneca County to Arthur J. and Cora (Shultz) Distel. She married John P. Zeiger June 29, 1973, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin. He died June 30, 2010.
Survivors include three step-sons, John F. (Joan) Zeiger of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Don R. Zeiger, and Mark D. Zeiger both of Tiffin; a step-daughter, Ann (Robert) Handley of Marion; five grandchildren, Michelle (David) Gardner, Kim (Ryan) Inskeep, Brian (Pamela) Zeiger, Timothy (Claire) Zeiger, and Mary (Sebastian) Peers;13 great-grandchildren; a brother, James A. Distel, of Calabasas, California; and four sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Distel, Marilyn Distel, and Janice Distel all of Tiffin, and Jan Rahrig of Fostoria.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, seven brothers, Robert, Richard, John “Butch”, Howard, Eugene, Arthur, Harvey Distel, and four sisters, Sr. Joan of Arc (OSU), Henrietta Smyser, Sr. St. Martin, and Dorothy Dickson.
Agnes was a 1944 graduate of Calvert High School. She entered the Ursuline Order of Religious Life in Toledo, September 12, 1944. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Mary Manse College and her Master’s Degree from Wayne State and Gallaudet to work with the deaf and disabled. She taught at Good Shepherd, Rosary Cathedral, St. Theresa’s, Our Lady of Perpetual Help all in Toledo, St. Rose in Perrysburg, St. Mary and St. Joseph’s and School of Opportunity all in Tiffin. She had taught from 1946-2007. She left the convent in June of 1971 to care for her father. During this time was when she met the love of her life, John Zeiger and they were married. After her retirement, she continued her love of teaching by substitute teaching for various schools. She was an active in member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, its Rosary Altar Society, CCD, and special Ed. CCD, the Bloodmobile, the Ursuline Association and the Retired Teachers Association were all close to her heart.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at Traunero Funeral Home and Crematory, 214 S. Monroe Street, Tiffin, Ohio 44883, (419)-447-3113. A wake service will be at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Prayers will be said at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 14, 2019, at the funeral home followed by the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Rev. Joseph Szybka will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The rosary will be recited in the church 20 minute prior to the Mass.
